The making of pianos in Estonia started at the end of the 18th century. In the early 20th century there were no fewer than 20 piano builders and the most notable was the manufacturer Ernst Hiis, whose hand-built piano was the prototype for the Estonia piano.
The Instrument
The instruments have received several awards for their excellent technique and were prominently represented on the numerous concert stages of the East. More than 7,500 concert instruments have been manufactured and pianists such as Sviatoslav Richter, Dmitry Shostakovitsch, Emil Gilels and Claudio Aurrau have performed on these fantastic instruments.
Since Estonia regained its independence in 1991, current owner Indrek Laul has returned Estonia to the high level of yesteryear.
Since 2001, Dr. Laul's family, consisting of pianist Reet Laul and conductor Venno Laul, has brought the Estonia grand pianos to a level where appearance and durability fulfill the wishes of every owner/pianist. The tone, touch and control are unparalleled.
